Fredericksburg, an independent city, was settled by Germans who called the settlement Germanna. It is physically within the county of Spotsylvania and was named in honor of the Prince of Wales, Frederick, who was the son of King George II and the father of King George III. It was incorporated as a town in 1781, and chartered as an independent city in 1879.
