Chincoteague is situated on Chincoteague Island in Accomack County. Legend has it that the feral ponies known as Chincoteague poliies, are descendants of a sunken Spanish galleon which wrecked off the coast of the island. In 1962, the entire town was underwater after the so-called Ash Wednesday Storm, a major nor'easter.
