Charlottesville, an independent city, is geographically located in Albemarle County. It is the county seat of Albemarle County. It was named in honor of Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the queen consort of King George III. It is historically notable as being the home to three US Presidents, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe, and the site of Jefferson's home, Monticello.
