Abingdon is the county seat of Washington County. In 1760, Daniel Boone named the area "Wolf Hills" commemorating the attack of his dogs by a pack of wolves while he was hunting. It was renamed Black's Fort in 1774 after the fort by the same name was erected to protect the settlers from attacks. In 1776, the community of Black's Fort was established as the county seat of Washington County, and in 1778, the name was changed to Abingdon and the town was incorporated. Abingdon was the hometown of Martha Washington's family.
