Situated among a series of narrow, long ridges, and low hills, Athens is the seat of McMinn County, Tennessee. When the first European Americans explorers arrived in the area, the county was inhabited by the Cherokee. When McMinn County was created in 1819, the settlement of Pumpkintown was chosen as its county seat, and renamed Athens shortly afterward.
