Union County, North Carolina

Category Description:

Union County was formed from portions of Mecklenburg County and Anson County in 1842. When it came time to name the county, the Whigs wanted their new county to be named for Henry Clay, while the Democrats wanted to name it for Andrew Jackson. They settled on Union County as a compromise. Monroe is the county seat.
