Robeson County was established in 1787 from part of Bladen County. It was named after Col. Thomas Robeson, a Revolutionary War hero from Tar Hell, North Carolina, who, along with 70 colonial rebels, defeated an army of 400 British loyalists in the Battle of Elizabethtown. The county seat is Lumberton.
