Mitchell County, one of four dry counties in North Carolina, was established in 1861, adopting portions of Burke, McDowell, Watauga, and Caldwell Counties. It was named in honor of mathematics, chemistry, geology, and mineralogy Professor Elisha Mitchell, of UNC. The county seat is Bakersville.
