Hyde County was originally established in 1705 as Wickham Precinct, which was one of three precincts in Bath County. In 1712, it was renamed after Edward Hyde, who was the governor of North Carolina at that time. In 1739, Bath County was eliminated and Hyde Precinct became Hyde County.
