Greene County was established in 1791 from the northern portion of Dobbs County. It was originally known as Glasgow County, after North Carolina Secretary of State James Glasgow, but after Mr. Glasgow's resignation due to his part in fraudulent land grants, the county was renamed after Major General Nathanael Green, commander of the U.S. troops in the Battle of Guilford Court House.
