Category Description:

Cherokee County was carved out of the western part of Macon County in 1839. Named for the Cherokees who still live in the area, the county was further divvied up in 1861, giving up some of its land to what became Clay County, and in 1872, it gave up part of the northeastern portion, which became Graham County. The county seat of Cherokee is Murphy.
