Category Description:

Winston-Salem is the county seat of Forsyth County, and is often called the Camel City, after the cigarette brand. More often, however, it is spoken of as simply Winston. Salem was settled in 1753, and Winston was settled in 1849. The two were incorporated into one town in 1913. The family of R.J. Reynolds, of tobacco fame, was instrumental in the prosperity of the town.
