Wendell is in Wake County and is pronounced with equal emphasis on both syllables. It was first settled in the 1850s when the Granville County Wilt devastated tobacco crops. With the urgent need to find more fertile land in which to plant crops, many moved to Wendell. It was named for poet Oliver Wendell Holmes, father of the famous Supreme Court Justice of the same name.
