Weddington is located in Union County. It was settled in the 1760s when the first migration of northern Europeans moved into North Carolina. Revolutionary War veteran Reuben Boswell donated four acres of land to the Sandy Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church in town. The town was named after that church, which was, in turn, named after his grandson, Reuben Boswell Weddington. The town was incorporated in 1983 as the Town of Weddington.
