Waynesville is located in Haywood County. Founded in 1809 by Revolutionary War hero Col. Robert Love, it was incorporated in 1871. Col. Love donated the land upon which the public square, jail, and courthouse sit, and it was he who named the town in honor of his former commander General Anthony Wayne, who was known as Mad Anthony Wayne.
