Stanley is located in Gaston County. It is one of the oldest in the county, having begun in the early 1700s. A prospector named Stanley spent some time panning for gold in what eventually became the Stanley Creek. Although his identity is lost in time, the little community that sprang up around the creek was known as Stanley's Creek Community. It was in existence for more than a century before becoming incorporated.
