Nags Head, situated in Dare County, has very high sand dunes visible from miles out to sea. It got its name from bandits, known as Nags, who would walk along the shore with lanterns tied around their necks. Ship captains would mistake them for the lights of other ships and come close to shore where they would run aground and be looted.
