Murfreesboro is in Hertford County. It was originally inhabited by the Nottoways, Meherrins, and Chowanoke tribes. John White, of Roanoke Colony, was the first European visitor to the area, and shortly after that, an expedition from Jamestown Settlement arrived in the area. The first deed in the area was recorded in 1714, and in 1735, the Meherrin Baptist Church was founded. in 1746, William Murfree bought a large plot of land along the Meherrin River, and in 1754, Murfree's Landing was renamed King's Landing. The town was finally chartered in 1787, at which time it was given its current name.
