Matthews, in Mecklenburg County, was known as Stumptown in the 1800s, so named because of the numerous stumps that covered the area when farmers who settled the town cleared the land. In 1874, the Carolina Central Railway built a railroad through town, and the name of the town was changed to honor Edward Watson Matthews, a director of the railroad. Matthews was incorporated in 1874.
