Incorporated in 1891 and named for William and John Linville, who were killed by Cherokees in 1766, Linville is a small community situated in Avery County. The East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad, also known as Tweetsie, traveled through Linville until 1940, when a flood washed away the tracks.
