Kill Devil Hills is in Dare County. From time to time during the colonial era, ships carrying rum would wreck, and the locals would scavenge the ship, hiding the rum they found behind large sand dunes. It was often said that the rum was so strong, it could kill the devil, which lead to the dunes to be called Kill Devil Hills.
