Highlands, an incorporated town in Macon County, was founded in 1875. Its founders, Samuel Truman Kelsey and Clinton Carter Hutchinson drew lines from Chicago, Illinois to Savannah and from New Orleans to Baltimore, declaring that they believed that the intersection of that line would eventually become a great trading center and commercial crossroads.
