Located in the Nantahala National Forest, in Macon County, Franklin is an incorporated town located in Franklin Township and is the county seat of Macon County. Present-day Franklin is in Nikwasi, an ancient Cherokee town. The remains of Nikwasi Mound can still be seen today near the center of town.
