Emerald Isle, in Carteret County, is part of the Crystal Coast and is located on the Bogue Banks. Until colonial times, Emerald Isle was populated entirely by Native American. Later, it was settled by whalers and fishermen. In 1960 ferry service began, and provided wider access to the Bogue Banks beaches, and in 1971, the Cameron Langston Bridge was opened, providing access from Cedar Point across the Intercoastal Waterway. Today, the coast is lined with homes and a few condominiums. There are, however, no oceanfront hotels.
