Elkin is a town on the Yadkin River in Surry County. Originally settled by the Sioux Indians more than 2,000 years ago, English colonists came in the mid-eighteenth century. Elkin Manufacturing was established in the area in the 1850s, and a wool mill in the 1870s. By 1890, the Northwestern North Carolina Railroad had arrived.
