Durham, county seat of Durham County, is the home of Duke University. Durham had its beginnings in 1853 with the search for a suitable railroad depot for the North Carolina Railroad between Raleigh and Hillsborough. A local physician, Dr. Bartlett Durham, lived along the route and donated some of his land to the railroad which named the depot after him.
