Concord, the county seat of Cabarrus County, North Carolina, is pronounced "conquered." Local wisdom has it that there were originally two towns, the town fathers of each desirous of having their town become the county seat. Instead of either one winning the struggle, a third town -- this one -- was created to be the county seat. This, explain those who will tell you this story, is the reason for the unusual pronunciation of the city's name. Concord is in the Southern Piedmont.
