Washington County, Maine was established on June 25, 1789, by the same act which formed Hancock County. It is a large county in Maine, and the easternmost in the state, bordered on the north by Aroostook County, to the west by Hancock County, and to the south and the east by the Gulf of Maine and the Atlantic Ocean. Of its land area, 1.47 million acres, or 85% of its land, is in forest, while 133,000 acres are taken up by lakes and ponds. Washington County is known for its blueberry crops, and is also home to the Passamaquoddy Indian Reservation.
