Sagadahoc County was first included in York County, and later in Lincoln County. Sagadahoc County was split off from Lincoln County and incorporated in 1854, with Bath as its county seat, and only city.
The first exploration of the area that was to become Sagadahoc County was led by Champlain. Later, Sir William Popham's Colony built there in 1608, and constructed a sea vessel, but after only a few months, it was abandoned. English fishermen and trappers visited the area over the following years, and Captain John Smith was known to have explored the region in 1614.
Today, the county is popular with tourists because of its long coastline, antique shops, and other attractions. It is also home to Bath Iron Works, Maine's largest employer, and the Maine Maritime Museum.
