Kennebec County was incorporated in 1799. Its county seat, Augusta, is also the state capital, and one of the largest cities in Maine. A large part of the county is rural, with numerous lakes, rivers, streams, and hills; and government is the largest employer in the county, although other significant industries include high-tech manufacturing, utilities, health care, and financial institutions.
