Aroostook County, most generally known as "the County" by its residents, is Maine's northernmost and largest. It was established on May 1, 1839, in the midst of the Aroostook War.
Famed for its potatoes, the County's premiere crop has declined considerably in recent years, as has its population. Nevertheless, the potato crop represents Aroostook County's dominant industry.
Its large tracts of land consisting of both forest and open spaces have attracted snowmobile enthusiasts each winter, supplementing its economy.
