Category Description:

Westmanland is a town in Aroostook County, organized on May 25, 1892 from T15 R4 WELS. As the New Sweden and Stockholm colonies filled with immigrants from 1870 on, there was a need for additional land, so a strip of T15 R4, on the western boundaries of New Sweden, was opened to settlement by Swedish immigrants. The state had deeded the eastern half of T15 R4 to Fryeburg Academy in 1850, with the exception of five hundred acres reserved for public uses. Fryeburg Academy in turn sold its interests to various land owners, who sold to the new Swedish immigrants. In 1879, the first group of immigrants settled on the land.

Located northwest of Caribou, this small community is accessible by Maine Route 161, which passes through New Sweden, Maine.
