Westfield was incorporated on March 7, 1905 from Westfield Plantation. It is composed of two half-townships owned by schools in Massachusetts, the Deerfield Academy Grant and the Westfield Academy Grant.
The first settlers, James Thorncraft and his wife, came to Westfield in 1839 and lived alone until others arrived in the area around 1841. The two grants were organized for election purposes in 1861, and the first school was built in 1863.
The village of Westfield is located between United States Routes 1 and 1A, just north of Mars Hill, in Aroostook County, Maine.
