Known by its Indian population as Quantabacook prior to the coming of the Europeans, Searsmont was settled sometime between 1780 and 1804, depending upon the source. It was incorporated on February 5, 1814 from Searsmont Plantation, named for David Sears, one of ten people who bought land in the area which had been held by the heirs of General Samuel Waldo. The main village is located along the St. George River, adjacent to Quantabacook Lake, and at the junction of several well-marked Indian trails. The town spreads over an area of about forty square miles. Today, Searsmont continues its lumbering heritage with two operating mills in town. Its community center houses the town office, library, historical society, community meeting room, youth room, and storage facilities.
The town is about ten miles southwest of Belfast, and is accessed by Maine Routes 3, 131, and 173.
