Saint Francis was organized as a plantation on May 29, 1875; and incorporated as a town on March 1, 1967. The Saint Francis River, which forms the northeastern border with Canada, along with the Saint John River, joins the Saint John at the town of Saint Francis. The Saint John River forms the northern boundary of Saint Francis. Just across the Saint John is Madawaska County, New Brunswick.
