Rockland is the county seat of Knox County, Maine. On July 28, 1848, it was incorporated as the town of East Thomaston, from a portion of Thomaston; however, the name was changed to Rockland in 1850, and was incorporated as a city in 1854. Rockland traded some land with Thomaston in 1849 and again in 1852, but its boundaries have remained stable since.
The fishing port community of Rockland was first settled in 1769, and it still retains the characteristics of a working waterfront, although it has seen a shift away from a fishing economy and toward a service center city, with a large increase in tourism.
