Reed Plantation was settled in 1804, and first organized on June 6, 1843 from T1 R3 WELS. Subsequently, it was reorganized in 1853, 1860, 1876, and 1896. The main village of the plantation is Wytopitlock, located in the southern portion of the plantation, along Maine Route 17 near the Mattawamkeag River and Wytopitlock Stream.
