In south-central Aroostook County, at the confluence of the Aroostook River and Umcolcus Stream, is Oxbow Plantation, which gets its name from an abrupt bend in the Aroostook near that area.
Oxbow became known as a fertile region during the Aroostook War, as many of the men who marched through the wilderness to fight the British stayed for a time in Oxbow, familiarizing themselves with the beauty and fertility of the region. The first settlers arrived in Oxbow Plantation in 1842, and the township was organized as N9 R6 in 1848, and became Oxbow Plantation in 1870. In time, much of the area was made into farms, and homes were built there as well.
