Located in Penobscot County, Orono was incorporated in 1806 from Stillwater Plantation, and named for a popular Chief of the Penobscot Indians who had supported the colonists during the American Revolution. The town was first settled in 1774, but the first settlers retreated to other settlements for protection during Indian raids in 1775, returning sometime after the Revolutionary War.
