Monticello was settled in 1830, although it was originally known as Wellington Plantation, for its first owner, General Joel Wellington of Albion. Monticello was incorporated on July 29, 1846, and named for President Thomas Jefferson's estate.

Monticello is located about twelve miles north of Houlton, and served by United States Route 1.
