Mapleton was first settled sometime around 1836, its early settlers arriving from New Brunswick. The town was incorporated on March 5, 1880 from Mapleton Plantation, named for the trees that are abundant in its forests. Mapleton is located west of Presque Isle along Maine Route 163.
