Category Description:

Liberty is a town in Waldo County, Maine. Its European settlement came in the late 1700s or early 1800s under the Waldo Patent. The early residents of Liberty attempted to secure their land rights by threatening to drop the local land agent through the ice into Lake St. George, and were arrested and tried in the Wiscasset courts. The settlement was then known as Davistown Plantation, which was incorporated into neighboring Montville in the early 1800s, but was later broken off to form Montville Plantation. The town was incorporated as Liberty on January 31, 1827, its current land area settled after it annexed land from Montville in 1876.

The town is served by Maine Routes 3, 173, and 220.
