Kennebunkport is a town in Maine's York County. The town was first incorporated on July 5, 1653 as the town of Cape Porpoise; but as the early settlers were driven away during Indian raids that prompted white settlers to evacuate most of Maine, the community was reorganized under the name of Arundel in 1718, in honor of the Earl of Arundel. In 1821, the name was changed to Kennebunk Port. On April 1, 1915, nearly a hundred years later, a new town was created from Kennebunk Port, and named North Kennebunkport. Its name was later changed to Arundel, so the new Arundel occupies a small part of the town that carried that name n 1719. Cape Porpoise remains as a coastal village within the town, along with Goose Rocks Beach, another seaside settlement. Kennebunk Port was later shortened to one word, as it is known today. In recent years, Kennebunkport has been made famous through visits by the two presidents Bush, the elder of which has a summer residence there.
