Named after the former president by that name, Garfield was first organized on March 26, 1883, organized again in 1885, and finally its organization as Garfield Plantation was confirmed on March 5, 1895. Located just west of Ashland, the Machias River runs through the plantation to join the Aroostook River in Ashland.
