When Camden was first incorporated as a town, on February 17, 1791, the spelling of the town's name was Cambden, from its previous incorporation as Cambden Plantation. In 1836, it annexed land from Warren, then split to form Camden, and the new town of Rockport. Camden, Maine is located along U.S. Route 1, which serves as the city's main street.
