Bridgton was incorporated on February 7, 1794 from Bridgetown Plantation, which had existed since 1779. During the 19th century, it ceded land to Harrison in 1805, 1866, and 1877; and to Naples in 1834 and 1856. In 1842 and 1847, it annexed land from Denmark and Fryeburg.
Bridgton has frontage on Long Lake, north of Sebago Lake, and faces Highland Lake, a good place for summer boating and camping.
