Bridgewater was incorporated on March 2, 1858 from portions of the Bridgewater Academy Grant R1 Plantation and the Portland Academy Grant Plantation.
Located on U.S. Route 1 in Aroostook County, just south of Mars Hill, and bounded on the east by Canada, Bridgewater hosts a United States customs station at the junction of Blaine Road and Bridgewater Corner Road.
