Boothbay Harbor was incorporated on February 16, 1889 from land set off from the town of Boothbay. The town's history as a tourist destination is a long one, as evidenced by references in 1931 town documents to the support of promotional efforts, and its restaurants, shops, art galleries, and marinas have become a major attraction to summer visitors, who also take part in touring coastal islands, whale watching, and other coastal activities.
