Named for James G. Blaine, then Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Blaine was incorporated on February 10, 1874 from Alva Plantation, which was itself organized on April 21, 1862.

Located in the heart of Aroostook County's potato country, between Bridgewater and Mars Hill on U.S. Route 1, the town is bordered on the east by Canada.
