San Joaquin was created in 1850, taking its name from the San Joaquin River. That name had been given to a small stream which sprang from the Sierra Nevada mountains and emptied into the Buena Vista Lake by Lieutenant Moraga during his 1800s expedition. The name is a reference to Saint Joachim
